A Christmas Workshop

Discover the beautiful, centuries-old craft of traditional stained glass painting in this relaxed and creative one-day workshop.

This workshop focuses on the traditional art of grisaille glass painting, using a subtle palette of earthy browns, soft muted greens and blacks. Rather than bright colours, the emphasis is on creating beautiful detail, texture, depth and contrasts of light and shade using traditional painting techniques.

Morning

Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, you’ll learn how to prepare and mix traditional glass-painting pigments and develop skills in lining, matting, stippling and Sgraffito.

Lunch

Please bring your own packed lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day.

Afternoon

Put your new skills into practice by creating your own Christmas-inspired piece of painted glass.

A selection of traditional festive designs, including robins, holly, pine cones and poinsettias, will be available for you to trace onto glass. Alternatively, you’re welcome to bring along your own design or create something entirely original, bearing in mind that you’ll be working on a small glass surface measuring approximately 7 x 7 cm.

You’ll have the opportunity to create either:

  • A flat glass Christmas bauble decoration, ready to hang on your tree.

  • A small painted glass picture, presented in a frame.

Your finished artwork will be kiln-fired to make the painting permanent and will be available for collection from the Eco Centre at a later date. Alternatively, if you’re coming from a distance, your artwork will be carefully packaged and posted to you.

Class size: Maximum of 6 participants, ensuring plenty of individual guidance.

Experience: Suitable for complete beginners. No previous painting or glass working experience necessary.

Materials: All glass, pigments, tools and equipment provided.

Refreshments: Tea and coffee provided. Please bring your own lunch.

Tutor: Sally King
